Established in the cramped confines of Alex’s rented basement in the fall of 2005, Cascadia Mushrooms was born. Putting his academic degree in mycology and the sciences from the Evergreen State College to work, Alex setup the first incarnation of a commercial mushroom farm on the micro scale.
After five years of learning through experimentation, a second rented space to house his growing business, and crafting a successful business plan, Alex acquired the financing necessary to build the mushroom farm of his dreams. In 2010 he broke ground on the permanent home for Cascadia Mushrooms in North Bellingham, Washington. Through those early days of cramped spaces and inadequate facilities, to the year-round efficient production that the farm maintains today, the vision has stayed the same: produce the best quality mushroom products possible and feed our community while raising awareness of our humble fungi friends.
Today the farm’s fresh gourmet mushrooms and mushroom growing kits can be found at more than two dozen local restaurants, select natural and organic food grocers, farmers markets from Bellingham to Everett, WA, community supported agriculture (CSA) shares, gardening centers, as well as directly from our website.
Alex and his team of dedicated myco-philes also host the public several times a year on the farm for mushroom growing workshops and tours of the facility.
Above all, Cascadia Mushrooms is dedicated to growing the best mushrooms possible using Organic growing practices. Fungi have the innate ability to cleanse soil and heal the environment. The goal of this farm is to nurture that ability, to teach it to others and hopefully to spark a little of the same inspiration that drives our work every day. Thank you for your support of our vision!
Columbia Mushroom Company
Columbia Mushroom Company began in a small greenhouse in the corner of Neil’s living room. At the time, he was pursuing a career growing liquid yeast for the brewing industry. He took up mushroom growing as a project similar to growing yeast, but with direct and delicious results. The excitement about mushrooms grew, and soon the space did too, moving to a room-within-a-room that we built ourselves. Upon moving onto our new property last year, we have been able to comfortably expand the farm and quadruple production. The growth of Columbia Mushroom Company has been wonderfully dynamic, as the industry of cultivating exotic mushrooms is still in its infancy. Every piece of equipment is an invention; every procedure is the summary of a thousand trial procedures. For these reasons and more, Columbia Mushroom Company is a true reflection of its founder, Neil Brent.
At Columbia Mushroom Company, simplicity and consistency are key. Using specialized mushroom cultivation bags, our mushroom mycelium first colonizes a grain substrate, before inoculating a sterilized mixture of supplemented sawdust. Once completely colonized, we cut open the sawdust bags, exposing the mycelium to the oxygen it needs to produce fruiting mushroom bodies. Our mushroom fruiting room has been outfitted to the proper light, humidity, and airflow for optimum mushroom growth. The mushrooms are picked to achieve a balance of flavor and shelf-life, with the consumer’s needs in mind. We then hand-package and hand-deliver, whether to our restaurants, wholesale buyers, or our local farmers markets.
Columbia Mushroom Company cares deeply about our people. Our community has been essential to us from the very beginning, and continues to be as we grow. As a Columbia Mushroom customer, we look forward to an open dialogue about your needs as a home cook, chef, or restaurant. Every mushroom is a success, and we are so thrilled to share that success with you.
Taste of the Earth LLC
Taste of the Earth, LLC is a family owned and operated business that specializes in wild foraged gourmet and medicinal mushrooms.
We began our adventures into the fascinating world of fungi as a hobby, but the more we learned, the more fascinated we became. We quickly began to realize that mushrooms are packed full of nutrition and many serve as a medicinal powerhouse that few pharmaceuticals can compete with. We studied mushrooms night and day, learning how to safely identify them, as well as exploring all of their amazing attributes.
We received our Mushroom Identification Expert Certification through the State of Michigan, which allowed us to begin sharing our foraged goodies.
Toting our 8 children through the remote forests of northern Michigan, we began to gather the best gourmet and medicinal mushrooms we could find.
Today, we continue to nurture our passion by educating people about the wonders of fungi, and providing the finest mushrooms that nature has to offer.
Russell is a fungi enthusiast based out of Portland, Oregon. His relationship to mushrooms honors the beauty and the spirit that they exude in the forest. With a keen eye for delectable wild edibles and exotic medicinal mushrooms, Russel provides some of our favorite mushrooms to work with. Including a few that are on private reserve.
The same heart and passion that works with the mushrooms of the forest is further represented in his cultivation space. Russell provides us with some of the most clean and beautiful mushrooms we have ever seen.
